Wooden Seal of Hamilton College
Content Description
Plaque depicting the Hamilton College Seal, carved in wood. "In 1977, to commemorate two Hamilton milestones — the 10th reunion of his son David Payton ’67 and the 40th reunion of his brother-in-law John Tracy Amsden ’37 — Jerome Payton commissioned a wooden carving of the College seal. The artist, Caroline Hope Romberger, used wormy American chestnut salvaged during the renovation of an organ in the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris, N.Y., to create the beautiful rendering, which measures nearly 30" in diameter. In January 2017, David Payton had the carving repaired and strengthened before donating it to the College in honor of the 50th reunion of the Class of 1967." (From Alumni Review 2017)
