Wooden cane from 1984 Commencement; carved with tricorne hat on top and inset with carved (or burned) "Hamilton College '84"; metal tip. Canes have been given to Hamilton College graduates since 1976 (Dean Lawrence Gulick '52, came up with the idea); further information in the Alumni Review (see http://www.hamilton.edu/lits/ari/show2.cfm?Alumnumber=10703): Volume XLI [1976], Number 3, p. 6--innovation at Commencement: seniors receive a handcarved wooden cane; Volume LIV [1989], Number 2, p. 4--traditional Hamilton gift to the newly graduated: cane with a Continental tri-corner hat; photo.
