Stampless letter, one sheet, folded, from J. Kirkland to Watts Sherman, Utica, March 7th, about a mortgage with the firm of Thomas H. Smith & Son (asking if he could pay only the interest this spring). No year given (mentions of Thomas H. Smith & Son appear in Google Books from 1811 through the 1830s). Joseph Kirkland (1770-1844), nephew of Samuel Kirkland, was a congressman and mayor of Utica. The recipient may or may not be Watts Sherman (c. 1820–1865).
