2 Chinese banners, silk, embroidered, framed: one with orange dragons has label on back saying "Traditional Chinese banner expressing condolence from colleagues of Lt. Stephen H. Kirner in Division of Medical Entomology, Naval Medical Research Unit No. 2; In affectionate memory of the late Lt. Stephen H. Kirner, Ph.D., of NAMRU No. 2; 'It is indeed a loss to the World for such a bright genius to depart from us so soon'; (from left to right) Miss Lien Chen Cheng, Mr. Shu Chan Lien, Mr. Chih Tai Liu, Mr. Wen Chin Huang, Dr. Stephen Moi Kee Hu, Mr. Mao Jen Lo, Miss Hwei Eng Yu, Mr. Hoh Ho Chu, Mr. Chautyen Lane." Other, with blue birds, has one label giving copies and translations of embroidered Chinese characters, and another label giving full translation: "To the Soul of Dr. S.H. Kirner, Lt. of U.S. Navy; 'The Creator welcomes the Genius like Dr. Kirner to Heaven, because He hates the Genius to experience so many Sufferings in this World.' Respectfully Dedicated by Dr. T.C. Kao, Superintendent of National Taiwan University Hospital." Labels (on letterhead) are headed "National Taiwan University Hospital, No. 1, Changte-Chieh, Section 1, Taipei, Taiwan." (Stephen H. Kirner, son of Dr. Walter R. and Juvanta Harper Kirner; born 8/8/31; Hamilton College class of 1952; received Ph.D. from Cornell U. in 1956; joined Navy as parasitologist; sent to Formosa (Taiwan) to study sleeping sickness, other diseases; killed in automobile accident, 9/20/1958. The Kirner-Johnson building was named for his parents.)
