love-note written on blotting paper in ink, found in the book The Bag of Diamonds, by George Manville Fenn, in the library stacks. The note says: [illegible month and day], 1883 or 1893 -- Dear Elihu Root, -- I am in love with you and I will meet you behind your house at 8:00 -- Love Mamie -- The book seems to have been published in 1892, which makes 1893 and hence Elihu Root, Jr., more likely candidates. Of course the note may have been a hoax written at any time.
